Political Exchanges
The Council sponsors political exchanges with the United States, Japan, China,
Papua New Guinea, Vietnam, New Zealand, South Korea and the Philippines.
The Council also provides opportunities for delegates to participate in a range of activities such as individual study tours, international forums and professional development programs overseas.
Selection and Role of Participants
How are delegates nominated?
Each year, the Council asks the three major political parties in the Federal Parliament to submit nominees to be considered by the Council for the forthcoming year's overseas exchanges.
Who is nominated to participate in an overseas study tour?
The Council looks for young, politically active individuals who are considered by their Parties to have the potential to make a significant contribution to political life. Participants are drawn from a broad spectrum of political involvement, including:
- members of Federal and State Parliaments;
- professional and voluntary party organisations;
- industry associations;
- trade unions;
- members of ministerial or electorate staffs; and
- local government representatives.
Nominees are required to be party members, Australian citizens, and between the ages of 25 and 46 (with the exception of the exchange programs with Japan and the United States where the age limit is 40).
What is expected of delegates after the exchange?
All delegates are expected to continue to participate in the Council's activities after their exchange through promotion of the program and involvement with future incoming delegations - such as suggesting or arranging activities, giving briefings, attending Council activities, and hosting functions.
